Goregrind
Sewn Shut Review: This starts with a slow, ominous riff, and then quickly
turns into Sewn Shut's usual assaultive grindcore that goes straight for
the jugular. Rapid, blasting and pounding drumming, bludgeoning fast grindcore
guitars and bass chaos, menacing, angry vocals (guttural growls and shrieking)
reciting equally angry, bad-moody, pessimistic lyrics about the world
going to hell. A fitting raw but powerful sound. Some damn fine grindcore
songwriting to be found here, intense, concise, catchy... everything executed
in a tight and fast as hell manner. I doubt you'll find a more devastating
and uncompromising band than Sewn Shut around... They keep it up with
the shocking imagery for the cover too... Disturbing.
Embalming Theatre Review: Begins with a nice and chilling intro taken
from Dario Argento's Suspiria... The rest is pounding and aggressive death-grind,
extremely fast and blasting drums, grinding heavy sound and some thrashing
guitar riffs, devastating growls. The band has a very basic approach to
the style, straightforward but also extremely speed-fueled death-grind
is what you're getting here... The recording is a little rough but still
quite thick and clear. 4 songs including one Filthy Christians cover version.
Kinda weird lyrics. In summary, killer Split Ep here... You know you want
it!

Side A has Embalming Theatre (Switzerland) churning out some vicious death/grind
with great low vocal growls and a nice mix of tempos. Four tracks plus
an intro and an outro, including an awesome cover of "Satanist"
by the Filthy Christians, which definitely stands out from the other songs.
They've got a totally raw recording here. It's not that bad, it just lacks
low-end. The vocals are a little loud, though not a major problem, and
guitars are somewhat thin but well textured… it just needs some
bass to fill in the gaps. Pretty good stuff. The lyrics are interesting
too, taking a different spin on the usual gore topics by exploring bizarre
real life scenarios: "Get stimulated now, You need it you want it,
And you can get it, Nature's hidden power, Hidden in animals' genetics,
Feel the force in your libido, Prefer the rarest animals on earth, Spend
cash for their best parts, Killed for a damn one night stand in Asia."
Sweden's Sewn Shut rips through five tracks of fucking brutal grind with
some dark crust/death metal overtones. I had forgotten how great this
band is! The vocal tradeoffs between low growls and higher sneers remind
me of Carcass, and there are some plodding breakdowns and a lot more metal
influences popping up here. The production is rough around the edges,
but definitely gets the job done. The mix can be noisy since the guitars
have a real bite going on, but there's a lot of low-end crunch, and the
vocals are kept in check. Awesome. The lyrics are all bleak as fuck and
deal with the twisted mistreatment of human life that can come at the
hands of political power games: "To increase the country's population,
contraceptives were banned and abortions were virtually forbidden, which
spawned a generation of abandoned children. Turned 23 million Romanians
into zombies with the sole purpose of producing for the state and the
pharaonic lifestyle of the ruling family." The 7" comes in a
black, white, and blue sleeve printed on matte paper, devoting one half
of the sleeve to each band for artwork and lyrics. This is a damn good
split. (7/10)

Ohmigod, what happened to EMBALMING THEATRE - http://www.embalmingtheatre.ch
-?? These guys were good, but they improved so much, that I'm nearly at
a loss for words and something like this rarely happens! This is grindcore
to the fucking max - ultra fast, raw, cruel and completely to the point.
No fancy bullshit, just full on raging, tormenting terrorcore with low
growling, guttural vokills. A fierce intro, 4 devastating tunes, including
"Satanist" from FILTHY CHRISTIANS, and an outro - sick music
cannot be played any better!! SEWN SHUT - http://sewnshut.da.ru - on the
other side are also going for the throat with some of the most uncompromising,
rigid and radical grindcore with multiple vokills! You have to own this
full throttle, grinding punk war and "NO": There're NO two opinions
about this fact!!
My Last Chapter
Sewn Shut gives you a cold and heavy intro to prepare you for
the upcoming brutality. This is one of my favourite grind bands, and they
sure as hell don't disappoint me. Brutal and heavy grind with dual vocals.
They use a lot more growls here, and I like it. They've also added a little
more metal into the mix. Fucking great! So, what happens when you flip
the vinyl over? Well... You get more growls and more heavy grind. This
time with a little gory feeling to it. Embalming Theatre has got a lot
of upcoming releases, and I understand why. It's cause they kick ass!
They signed for a fullenght on Razorback Records coming summer 2003. Looking
forward to that one... Sewn Shut will also record a fullenght, hopefully
soon! A fucking ace split!
