Split EPs are on of the nicest inventions in the whole metal scene. Not only do I love this 7" format also I like to hear the two bands on such a release presenting themselves in just a mere few minutes. Sometimes a bigger band presents a smaller band or bands who are on friendly terms with each other show their appreciation for each other with such a split release. And sometimes two awesome bands split together on one 7" EP. That is actually what I thought of this EP (in the end I think Embalming Theatre was a bit disappointing, but nothing to worry about either). Both Embalming Theatre and Birdflesh are bands who are doing their thing for some years now and both got the recognition they deserve, which is utterly rare I gues…
This split EP is opened by Birdflesh arguably the most sick and twisted grind band from Sweden. With their raw and harsh yet very groovy, brutal and pounding way of creating unique and recognizable grindcore they belong to the top of the current scene and get so much attention, which is nothing but a logical result of years of hard labour. And the songs presented on this split 7" is nothing but a nice example of that. Their side is called "Death Metal Karaoke" and is decorated with a nice Simpsons-style drawing which you will be able to find on each Birdflesh release. The humour of the guys is always reflected in the music, and so is it here. Nothing really new to report here, just the usual Birdflesh ingredients all finely mangled into some new tracks which are definitely worth checking. Yet, there are some remarkable things to mention though. They included a violin on the "Blind Butcher"-track played by some dude with the name 'Smattro Ansjovis', and a nice backing vocals choir is done by 'Rob The Robber' and 'Lenny Blade'. Most funny track is possibly the last one called "Vikings From The North", which they claim to be a cover of a band that should be called "Carnage From Beyond". I'm pretty sure that this is no real cover and this band is a fictive band, guess for fun (one shouldn't try to follow these guys humour!). But it is surely nice to hear Birdflesh playing Viking metal, a new genre is born, polka-viking-grind… Yeah, whatever…
The other side is filled with the Swiss band Embalming Theatre. A band that is putting out releases as regular as a heartbeat but what is rather strange is that the recordings were done about over two years ago (2002) and that is really a bit of a let down for I was expecting some new tracks. This is also the reason why the songs aren't as good as some recently released material, also the recording quality is a little less than the last few studio tracks. Nevertheless you'll grow into these three tracks and intro after a couple of spins. The last song on this EP is a cover of the Canadian cult band Infest ("Sick Of Talk"). At this point the band was also more leaning towards death metal than they are doing today. But don't get me wrong, it is still above average and pretty enjoyable too. But the fact is that I heard the band better than this. The artwork is definitely a huge pre to me, for it is one of the better things I saw of them.

Birdflesh/Embalming Theatre split 7": Fuck, now this is a great split. Sweden's BIRDFLESH, who, it should be no secret now, have a member of NASUM, deliver the goods once again with thier hilarious and brutal half, "Death Metal Karaoke." You must see the album cover, it pretty well sums up the band- totally retarded and juvenile but completely brutal and appropriate too. And that's like the music- it's great that even when they're fucking around and singing about eating hamburgers out of a ballerina's ass, thier music is still leagues better than 90% of all the grind bands today. And then there's EMBALMING THEATRE, from Swizerland. I tell ya- there's something about the band photo inside the sleeve- I mean what the hell are those things? Maybe they're just props from a japanese children's show, but they look to me like mutated mad max rejects meeting the Feebles. Anyway, I stared at this photo the whole time i first listened to this bizarre death-grind outfit sing songs in italian about insects crawling over thier flesh and it produced a genuinely unsettling effect. And then they do an INFEST cover. Great stuff from both bands- Get this now! (EL)

BIRDFLESH – http://www.birdflesh.com –are back with another onslaught of viciously fast, crushing grindcore, but what separates them from masses of other grind outfits are their hilarious lyrics like for example “Though he’s blind, he always smile / He likes the fact that you’re getting hacked / Your family’s wondering where you are / They find the answer at the hamburger bar“ (“Blind butcher“). EMBALMING THEATRE – http://www.embalmingtheatre.ch – are playing brutal grindcore with totally unintelligible vox! Their cover of “Sick of talk” by INFEST is entirely mandatory!!

Wow, two of the hottest "true" u/g deathgrind bands around finally team up! Embalming Theatre punch you in the lung with their blastbeat-laden IMMOLATION via Sweden (they're from Erich Keller Land) heavy deathcore with fucking bizarre lyrics that I JUST DON'T FUCKING GET! The tunez crush testicles though and that's all you need to worry about. Production? It's fucking ace of course. BIRDFLESH always reminded me if old NAPALM DEATH sucked, but paradoxically the band REALLY kicks arse (and the ear-searing beehive guitar tone COMPLETELY decimates). BLAST BLAST BLAST and thats' all they give a fuck about! This isn't throw-away material from either band by the way. Clay's literally gone broke putting out some totally killer bands with BAD ASS full color packaging...so if YOU decide not to support him, then yer just not 'core!
